Seven Signs a Gutter System Is Failing

Walk the house once in a steady rain and once when it is dry.

  • Water sheeting over the front edge in an ordinary rain, not just a downpour.
  • A run pulling away from the fascia, or a visible dip where water sits.
  • Tiger striping, the dark vertical streaks down the gutter face.
  • Peeling paint or soft wood on the fascia behind the gutter.
  • A washed-out trench in the mulch or soil under the eave.
  • Water or staining at the foundation near a downspout.
  • Drips at the joints of an older sectional gutter after the rain stops.

What Each Kalamazoo Season Does to a Gutter

Fall fills it

The mature trees over Kalamazoo’s older streets drop their load straight onto the roof below. Leaves mat over outlets, seeds wedge into downspout elbows, and a gutter that drained fine in August is a standing trough of wet debris by Halloween.

Winter freezes it

Water still sitting in a clogged run at the first hard freeze turns to ice, and ice is heavy. It bellies the gutter, pries fasteners out of the fascia, and sends snowmelt over the back edge and down the wall behind it.

Summer storms overload it

A thunderstorm delivers its water in bursts, and every square foot of shingle feeds the same few outlets. Gutters or downspouts too small for the roof above them overflow in exactly the storms they exist for. The numbers are in the sizing section.

Time loosens it

Spikes back out, hangers fatigue, seams open, and the slope that carried water to the downspout flattens as the house settles.

Gutters do not cause ice dams. An ice dam forms when heat escaping through the roof melts snow high on the slope and the water refreezes at the cold eave. University of Minnesota Extension puts it in one line: “Nonuniform roof surface temperatures lead to ice dams.” A clogged gutter adds ice weight at the edge, but the cure for a dam is in the attic. See our guide to ice dams and roof snow.

The first question

Gutter Leak Repair, or a New System?

Not every leaking gutter needs to come down. Sectional gutters usually leak at their joints, and any gutter can leak at end caps, outlet seams, and downspout elbows. Where the run itself is sound, resealing a joint, resetting the slope, or swapping a crushed elbow is a legitimate fix, and we do that work. What we will not do is smear sealant over a system failing everywhere at once and call it repaired.

Usually a repair

One leaking seam or end cap, a downspout that has come apart at an elbow, a sagging section that needs new hangers, or a run that needs its slope reset after the fascia was disturbed.

Usually a replacement

Leaks at several seams, runs pulling off the house, rust or rot, crushed or undersized downspouts, paint peeling all along the fascia line, or water in the basement after every storm.

Seamless aluminum, formed at your house

Store-bought gutter comes in sections with a joint about every ten feet, and each joint is a future leak and a snag for debris. We run 5 inch and 6 inch K-style aluminum through a forming machine in your driveway, one continuous piece per run, cut to the measured length of the roofline and sloped to its downspouts.

Aluminum does not rust, and it comes in a range of factory colors to match siding and trim. Longtime Kalamazoo homeowners call the system eavestroughs, and so does the city. Before anything new goes up we check the fascia and soffit, because hanging a new system on water-damaged wood just schedules the next failure.

Sizing

How Much Water a Kalamazoo Roof Has to Shed

Gutters are not sized for a day of rain. They are sized for the worst five minutes of a thunderstorm. NOAA publishes that number for every location in the country, and these are its estimates for downtown Kalamazoo.

6.77Inches per hour: peak 5-minute rainfall rate in a 10-year storm
10.4Inches per hour: the same peak in a 100-year storm
70Gallons a minute off a 1,000 square foot roof plane at the 10-year rate
108Gallons a minute off that same plane at the 100-year rate

Source: NOAA Atlas 14 Precipitation Frequency Data Server, point estimates for Kalamazoo (42.2917, -85.5872). Gallon figures are our arithmetic from NOAA’s rates: one inch of rain on one square foot is 0.623 gallons. Rounded.

What that means on your house

A 1,000 square foot roof plane is roughly one side of the roof on a good-sized ranch house. In the hardest burst of a storm Kalamazoo should expect about once a decade, that one plane pours enough water into its gutter to fill a 55 gallon rain barrel in under a minute, and all of it leaves through one or two downspouts. A valley concentrates it at one spot. That is why gutter size and the number of outlets are measured for each run instead of guessed. For the storms this area has recorded, see our storm damage statistics for Kalamazoo County and the counties around it.

Bigger is not automatically better. The roof area draining to each run decides it.

Gutter Guards: the Types and What Each Handles

On a tree-lined street, cleaning gutters is not a once-a-year chore, it is a ladder trip every few weeks of fall. A guard closes the top of the gutter so debris stays out while water drops through. We install guards on new gutters and on existing runs still in good shape. The four common designs behave very differently under the trees you have.

Guard typeHow it worksHandles wellWeak spot
ScreenPerforated metal or plastic panel over the troughWhole leaves and twigsSeeds, pine needles, and shingle grit fall through or lodge in the holes
Micro-meshFine woven mesh over a rigid frameLeaves, needles, seeds, and most shingle gritPollen and tree sap can film the mesh, so it needs a brushing now and then
Reverse-curveSolid cover; water clings to the curved edge and rolls in while leaves slide offLarge leaves in moderate rainFast water can overshoot the curve in a downpour, and small debris follows the water in
Foam or brushAn insert that sits inside the troughLarge leaves, for a whileTraps fine debris and seeds inside the gutter, where it is harder to clean than an open trough

Nothing makes a gutter truly maintenance-free, and any product sold that way deserves your suspicion. What a good guard does is cut the cleaning down to an occasional rinse and keep the system draining through the weeks when the trees let everything go at once.

Where the water goes

Downspouts and Drainage

The gutter only collects the water; the downspouts decide where it goes. A downspout that dumps a whole roof plane against the foundation is a common cause of a wet basement, and it is one of the simpler ones to cure.

  • Enough outlets. A long run or a big roof plane needs more than one way out.
  • Outlets where water can leave. Not onto a walk that ices over or a bed that slopes back to the house.
  • Extenders. Discharge carried well away from the foundation.

If your lot holds water after a storm, tell the estimator.

Local rules

Historic Districts and Permits in Kalamazoo

About a third of the city’s housing was built before 1940, and some of its older neighborhoods are local historic districts, where the City of Kalamazoo’s Historic District Standards cover “eaves troughs” as part of the roof. In short:

  • Metal only. Approved material is half-round metal, K-style metal, or a match to what is there. Vinyl “will not be approved.”
  • Straps on decorative eaves. Where there is crown molding, gutters hang from straps instead of being nailed into the molding, and half-round is called the best choice.
  • Small gutters for small roofs. The 4 inch size is for a porch roof, not a main roof.
  • Guards may be approved.

We install seamless aluminum K-style gutters. If your house carries half-round gutters on crown molding, raise it at the estimate and call the Historic Preservation Coordinator at (269) 337-8804 before any work is planned.

Permits: we handle it

When your job needs a permit, Lyster Exteriors pulls it.

For reference, the City of Kalamazoo’s Non-Structural Maintenance Permit page names re-roofing, residing, and window work. It does not name gutters.

Working with us

Gutters, Roof, and Siding in the Right Order

Gutters live where the roof, fascia, and siding meet, and we work on all of it. If a roof replacement is coming, the sequence is roof first and gutters right after, so the new drip edge and the new gutters line up. If a run failed because the fascia behind it rotted, the wood is repaired before anything new hangs, with siding or trim work planned around it. After wind or hail, dented gutters are often the first visible sign of what happened on the roof, so start with storm damage roof repair. Gutters also belong in any roof maintenance routine.

How a Gutter Job Runs

  1. Measure. Free estimate at the house: every roofline, the roof area above each run, the fascia, and the existing downspouts.
  2. Decide. Repair or replace, 5 inch or 6 inch, color, guards or none, and where each downspout lands.
  3. Permit, if the job needs one. We pull it.
  4. Tear-off. The old system comes down and is hauled away, and the fascia gets a last check.
  5. Form and hang. New runs are formed on site by our own employees, sloped, and fastened. Downspouts and extenders go on last.
  6. Walk it with you. You see where every downspout discharges before we leave.

Questions

Gutters in Kalamazoo: Frequently Asked Questions

What makes seamless gutters better than sectional ones?

Sectional gutters have a joint about every ten feet, and every joint is a future leak and a snag point for debris. Seamless gutters are formed on site in one continuous piece per run, so the only joints are at corners and outlets.

What size gutters does my house need?

It depends on the roof area draining to each run. Many single-story homes do well with 5 inch K-style gutters. Large or steep roof planes, long runs, and heavy tree cover usually justify 6 inch gutters with larger downspouts. At NOAA’s 10-year peak rate for Kalamazoo, 1,000 square feet of roof sheds about 70 gallons a minute.

Do clogged gutters cause ice dams?

No. Ice dams come from uneven roof temperatures: heat escaping from the house melts snow high on the roof, and the water refreezes at the cold eave. A clogged gutter fills with ice, adds weight at the edge, and sends meltwater down the fascia, which makes the mess worse, but the fix for a dam is air sealing, insulation, and ventilation in the attic.

Are gutter guards worth it in Kalamazoo?

Under mature trees, usually yes. The type matters: a simple screen stops whole leaves, while micro-mesh also stops seeds, needles, and shingle grit. No guard removes maintenance entirely, but a good one takes away most of the ladder trips.

Can gutter guards go on my existing gutters?

Yes, when the existing runs are sound, pitched correctly, and firmly attached. Putting a guard over a gutter that leaks or holds water only hides the problem, so we look at the gutter first.

Do I need a permit for new gutters in Kalamazoo, and who gets it?

When a job needs a permit, Lyster Exteriors pulls it. The city’s maintenance permit page names re-roofing, residing, and window work, not gutters. In a local historic district the gutter material and how it is hung are covered by the city’s standards, so call the Historic Preservation Coordinator at (269) 337-8804 first.

A storm bent or tore down my gutters. What now?

Photograph the damage before anything is moved, dents in the gutter face and downspouts included. Then have the roof above checked, because wind and hail strong enough to damage a gutter rarely stop there. Whether to file an insurance claim is your decision.
