Every few winters Southwest Michigan gets a snow load that makes homeowners look nervously at the ceiling. Here is when roof snow actually matters, what it does to Kalamazoo roofs, and how to deal with it without wrecking your shingles or yourself.
When snow on the roof is a real problem
Fresh fluffy snow is light; the trouble is accumulation and the wet, dense snow that follows a thaw. Warning signs worth acting on: doors sticking inside the house, visible sagging in the roof plane, cracking sounds, and more than a couple of feet of settled snow on a low-pitch roof. Flat-roof sections, porches, and additions carry the highest risk because snow does not shed from them.
The bigger Michigan problem: ice dams
For most pitched Kalamazoo roofs, the danger is not weight but the freeze-thaw cycle. Heat escaping the attic melts the snow blanket from below; the meltwater refreezes at the cold eaves into a dam that backs water up under the shingles. If you see thick ice at the gutter line and icicles bridging into the soffit, that is an ice dam forming, and the stains usually appear along exterior walls weeks later.
How to remove snow safely
From the ground, with a roof rake, taking the first few feet above the eaves and leaving a thin layer so you are not scraping granules. Never climb onto a snowy roof, never chip at ice dams with hatchets or hammers, and skip the rock salt, which corrodes flashing and kills the plants below. If a dam has already formed and water is coming in, that is a professional call, and yes, we have removed ice dams for customers mid-winter.
