St. Joseph, MI Siding & Roofing Contractor

Lyster Exteriors installs vinyl and fiber cement siding and asphalt shingle roofing in St. Joseph, MI, with our own Kalamazoo crews, working since 1998. On the lakeshore the two jobs are rarely separate: the west wind that lifts shingles also fades and rattles siding, so one estimator looks at the whole exterior.

Siding on the lakeshore

On the Bluff, Siding Takes the First Hit

St. Joseph sits on a bluff above Lake Michigan, at the mouth of the St. Joseph River, and every house within earshot of the lighthouse lives with what that means. Weather crosses the full width of the lake with nothing to slow it down, so the west and southwest walls of a St. Joseph home age years ahead of the sheltered sides.

The lake side of the house is a shade paler than the street side. Panels on the windward corner click and rattle in a blow, a sign they were nailed too tight or have worked loose. Caulk at the window trim has split. If only one elevation has weathered out, we will say so, and re-side that wall instead of the whole house.

Materials and method

What Goes on the Wall

We install two siding materials, and both are described in full on our siding page. Lyster Exteriors is a CertainTeed 5-Star vinyl siding contractor.

Vinyl siding

Light, color-through, and never needs paint. Vinyl grows and shrinks with temperature, so it is hung, not pinned: every panel has to slide in its nail slots. Certified vinyl siding is tested for wind load and carries a design pressure rating on the product or the carton. On a wall that takes the afternoon sun, darker colors run hotter, so talk color through for the west side.

Fiber cement siding

A rigid, cement-based plank with a painted finish. It is heavier than vinyl and is fastened tight to the wall, so it does not rattle in wind. The upkeep is the paint and the sealed joints.

How a west wall gets fastened

  • Wrap first. Vinyl siding is a cladding, not a water barrier. The manual requires a water-resistive barrier behind it, with flashing tied into that barrier around windows, doors, corners, and roof lines.
  • Nails centered and left loose. Fasteners go in the center of the slot, no more than 16 inches apart on horizontal panels, with about the thickness of a dime between the nail head and the panel. Nailed tight, the wall buckles in the heat.
  • Room at every stop. A quarter inch of clearance where panels meet trim and openings, more in cold weather.
  • Extra care where a wall meets a roof. On a south or west exposure the manual recommends a metal J-channel, or holding the vinyl channel back from the shingles, because of the heat that builds there.
  • Tighter soffit nailing in wind. In high-wind areas, soffit nailing should not exceed 12 inches on center.

Michigan’s residential code puts ground exposed to wind coming across open water in its most demanding wind category, Exposure D, and carries it at least 600 feet inland from the edge of the open area. Whether your address falls in it is the building official’s call.

The roof edge

Soffit and Fascia: the Edge That Fails First

The fascia board carries the gutters, the soffit vents the attic, and together they form the seam where roof, siding, and water management all meet. When gutters pull loose or overflow, the fascia behind them rots quietly. When soffit vents clog or get painted shut, attic moisture shows up as ice at the eaves in January.

We handle soffit, fascia, and trim as part of siding and gutter projects. Rotted boards come out and new wood goes in. Vented soffit panels go where the attic needs intake air, and aluminum trim is bent to fit. Then the gutters hang on wood that can hold a screw.

The wind record

What the Lake Has Thrown at St. Joseph

These are reports the National Weather Service office for Berrien County published after two storms in 2025:

  • May 15, 2025A weather station just north-northwest of St. Joseph reported a 96 mph gust at 10:20 p.m., and a spotter in the city reported a tree three feet across down on a house.
  • March 30, 2025The Benton Harbor airport station measured a 78 mph thunderstorm gust at 4:54 p.m. Near Buchanan, a house was reported with siding, shingles, fascia, and soffit gone.

Sources: National Weather Service Northern Indiana, May 15 and 16, 2025 wind event and March 30, 2025 severe storms. Preliminary storm reports. The 96 mph reading came from a private station.

Our storm damage statistics page covers Kalamazoo County and six nearby counties, not Berrien, so the record above comes straight from the Weather Service.

Roofing above the lake

Wind off the water tests the west slopes first: lifted tabs, creased shingles, ridge caps peeled back. We do both roof repair and roof replacement. A run of wind-lifted shingles, one failed pipe boot, or flashing that has worked loose is a repair. Shingles that snap instead of flex, granules collecting in the gutters, or leaks in more than one room point to replacement. Before 1940

St. Joseph became a city in 1891, and the blocks near downtown and the bluff still carry tall houses from those decades: steep rooflines, original wood trim, and often older siding layers underneath. The old layers come off so we can see the sheathing.

1940s and 1950s

About a quarter of the city’s homes date from these two decades. They are ranches and capes with low eaves and short overhangs, and most have been re-sided at least once. The usual finds are thin soffit venting and fascia wrapped over rot.

Permits

Permits in St. Joseph: We Pull Them

When your job needs a permit, Lyster Exteriors pulls it for you. The city’s own handout says the same thing from the other side: when a homeowner hires a contractor, the contractor should obtain the permit, and the homeowner should confirm the contractor is licensed.

The handout also says cosmetic work such as painting and trim work does not need a permit, and that all other work generally does. Addresses in Stevensville, Shoreham, Lincoln Charter Township, or St. Joseph Charter Township are outside the city and answer to their own offices.

Why a Kalamazoo crew

About 50 Miles Up I-94, and Worth Saying So

Our shop is at 2211 Miller Rd, Kalamazoo, MI 49001. St. Joseph is about 50 miles west of it. There are companies with offices closer to you, so here is what the drive buys.

  • Employees on the wall. The people siding your house work for Lyster Exteriors. We do not hand the job to a subcontractor.
  • One company for every seam. Siding, soffit, fascia, gutters, windows, and roof meet at the flashing. One contractor is answerable for all of it.
  • A warranty with years behind it. Our roofing carries a 10-year workmanship warranty, from a company that has been in business since 1998.
  • A planned job does not care about the drive. Siding and roof replacements are scheduled work. The distance changes nothing about how the wall is fastened.

You can read what past customers say before you call.

Where the distance does matter: a tarp-it-now emergency in the middle of a storm. A Berrien County roofer may simply get there sooner. Call us anyway, and we will come tell you whether the quick patch held.

What We Look at on an Estimate Visit

Part of the houseWhat the estimator checks
West and southwest wallsFading, brittle or cracked panels, and loose courses.
Openings and cornersSplit caulk, missing flashing, and soft trim.
Roof edgeFascia behind the gutters and soffit venting.
Shingles and flashingWind creases, lifted tabs, granule loss, and a layer count.
AtticIntake and exhaust ventilation, and staining left by past ice dams.

How a Siding Job Runs

  1. Measure and choose. The estimator measures the walls, shows you profiles and colors, and gives you a written estimate of what is included.
  2. Permit and calendar. We pull the permit when the job needs one and set a start date around the weather.
  3. Strip the wall. Old siding comes off so the sheathing can be seen. Soft or rotted wood is cut out and replaced.
  4. Wrap and flash. House wrap goes on, and every window, door, and roof line is flashed into it.
  5. Hang the siding. Starter strip, corners, and channels first, then the courses, fastened so they can move.
  6. Finish the edge. Soffit, fascia, and trim are completed, the yard is cleaned up, and we walk the house with you.

Roof replacements follow our roofing process.

Questions

Siding and Roofing in St. Joseph, MI: Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to replace siding or a roof in St. Joseph, and who gets it?

When a permit is needed, Lyster Exteriors pulls it as part of the job. The city’s handout says cosmetic work does not need a permit and all other work generally does, and that a hired contractor should be the one to obtain it. For a specific project, the Building Inspection Department at (269) 983-1212 has the final word.

Does Lyster Exteriors install vinyl siding in St. Joseph?

Yes. We install and replace vinyl siding and fiber cement siding over house wrap, with flashing at every opening and the trim, soffit, and fascia finished as part of the job. Our siding page explains how we install and replace siding.

Vinyl or fiber cement for a house near the lake?

Vinyl needs no paint and handles wind well when it is rated for the exposure and fastened so the panels can move. Fiber cement is rigid and quiet in wind and holds a painted finish, and its upkeep is the paint and the sealed joints.

Do you repair or replace soffit and fascia?

Yes, as part of siding and gutter work. Rotted fascia boards are replaced before new gutters hang on them, soffit panels are replaced or vented where the attic needs airflow, and aluminum trim is bent and fitted on site.

Should I repair my siding or replace it?

If a few panels cracked or blew loose and the profile is still made, a matched repair is the right answer. When panels have gone brittle, the color has faded past matching, or water has been getting behind the wall, a patch only moves the problem. Often the answer on the lakeshore is in between: replace the windward wall and leave the sheltered ones.

A windstorm just came off the lake. What should I check?

Walk the house from the ground. Look for panels that have unlocked or are hanging, missing corner or trim pieces, soffit panels pushed up or gone, shingles in the yard, and gutters pulled off the fascia. Take photos before anything is moved. We photograph storm damage for your insurance adjuster as well. See our page on storm damage repair. Whether to file a claim is your decision.

Is Lyster Exteriors local to St. Joseph?

Not in the sense of an office in town. Our shop is at 2211 Miller Rd in Kalamazoo, about 50 miles east on I-94. Our own employee crews make the drive for scheduled siding and roofing work. For an emergency tarp during a storm, a Berrien County company may reach you sooner.

Do you side homes in Stevensville and Lincoln Township?

Yes. Stevensville, Shoreham, and Lincoln Charter Township are a few minutes south of St. Joseph and the same drive from our shop. Those addresses are outside the city, so the township or village handles the permit, and we pull it there too.
